The Jamaican Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church hosted its 112th session at the Greater Selby’s Temple AME Church, which is pastored by the Rev. Leonora Thompson Prince, from May 15-19, 2024, under the dynamic leadership of Bishop Marvin Clyde Zanders II and Supervisor Winifred Houston Zanders. The Conference proved to be a resounding success, bringing together members, clergy, and leaders from across communities, the island, across waters, and virtual platforms. By the end of the conference, all attendees were empowered as their spiritual ZEAL increased (Zested Energy for AnointedLiving), and members were ignited with a strong sense of community.
The conference featured powerful sermons guided by its overall theme: “Reflecting on the Past: Reaching For The Future.” There was a focus on creating a mindset as children of God embracing the life of Eagles. Our praying Bishop used that moment to further endorse continued unity within the 16th Episcopal District. We were given the mantle to pray on specific days for each Conference (7 days for 7 Conferences). He referenced Moses, who triumphed, not waging war but engaged in prayer. Our guest preacher, Rev. Dr. W. Antoni Sinkfield, Associate Dean of Community Life and Campus Operations at the Wesley Theological Seminary, encouraged the members of the conference, reminding us that “ministering like an eagle requires us to fly solo.”
With songs of praise, the Music Ministry led by Bro. Johnoy Davis, ushered in the presence of the Lord as the business of the Church was completed. The conference also celebrated the achievements of individuals such as the members who had matriculated in the Board of Examiners as well as the members who had successfully completed their studies in Theology. With the Rev. Dr. Sinkfield and the Rev. Dr. Ammie Davis, President of Turner Theological Seminary Alumni Association, present, we celebrated the remarkable achievements of our members. The Reverend Opal Morrison Dunkley graduated with a Master of Theological Studies from the Wesley Theological Seminary, and the Rev. Teslyn Roofe and Rev. Neila Ingram both graduated with a Master of Divinity from the Payne Theological Seminary. Their success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our members, inspiring us all to strive for excellence.
Throughout the conference, the reports from the various components gave rise to discussions that underscored the importance of outreach and community service. Various initiatives were discussed, focusing on education, healthcare, the state of the country, the upliftment of our youths, and poverty alleviation. We focused on implementing solutions that would directly affect positive changes within our churches, communities, and the entire conference collectively.
Worship was refreshing as each night showcased dynamic speakers from the conference who shared a specific word from God for God’s people. The final night was truly an explosion as the Young People and Children’s Division (YPD) showed the Conference how to have fun in Christ. Through music, dance, poetry, and other creative expressions, the YPDers engaged the members, clergy, and sizzling Supervisor in a night of celebrations.
The conference concluded with a renewed sense of mission and vision for the future. As we bid farewell to this successful session, we look forward to the future with hope and excitement. Plans were laid out for continued growth, increased outreach, and greater engagement with the wider community. As members returned to their respective congregations, they carried with them a renewed spirit and a shared vision for the future, eager to implement the plans and bring about positive changes.
