Nurturing Faith and Community: The Blossoming Christian Life at Wilberforce University

By Dr. John Freeman

Christian Life at Wilberforce University plays a crucial role in the success and retention of Black students and has historically been a key factor in their academic and personal growth. The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church has been instrumental in this journey. The relationship between the AME Church and Wilberforce University is illuminated through the efforts of the Religious Life and Chaplaincy.

The Wilberforce Chaplaincy, led by Dean of Religious Life Dr. John Freeman, promotes various programs and initiatives to nurture and strengthen the bond between the Church, the community, and Wilberforce University. These include weekly Bible studies and well-attended Chapel services, daily campus-wide devotionals, revivals, game nights, and special events!

Recently, a Church Fair Day was hosted, fostering relationships not only with the AME Church but also with other denominations from surrounding communities. Over twenty churches participated. A Trunk or Treat community event is planned for October.

The Religious Life office is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm; however, the Dean is available 24/7. “I am blessed to minister not only to the student population but also to the entire University and the community,” said Dr. Freeman, who has more than forty years of experience in this type of ministry. “I eagerly meet new students and look forward to providing them Biblical, pastoral, and spiritual guidance. I feel divinely appointed for such a time as this.”

The Religious Life Ministry is devoted to the Seven Dimensions of Spiritual Growth:

  • Grow Larger Through Evangelism
  • Grow Broader Through Partnership
  • Grow Deeper Through Discipleship
  • Grow Stronger Through Worship
  • Grow Wiser Through Prayer
  • Grow As Leaders Through Learning

As an HBCU Christian school, Wilberforce not only plays a critical role in nourishing students spiritually but also in helping to increase and retain the number of AME Church-affiliated college students. Working together, the AME Church and Wilberforce University are making a positive difference in the lives of students who will greatly impact the world.

Today, the AME Church continues to play a vital role in Wilberforce University’s life, fostering a strong sense of community and spiritual growth among students. The church’s historical and ongoing support underscores the deep, enduring relationship between the AME Church and Wilberforce University, highlighting the importance of religious life in the success and retention of Black students.
