16th District Announces Pastoral Changes in European Annual Conference

The Sixteenth District, and specifically the European Conference, express our gratitude for the pastorate of the Rev. Dawn Lockett Hobson at Richard Allen Cathedral AME Church. In 2017, she heeded the call of Connectional itineracy and lived out our mandate to go to England. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was ordained in the Washington Conference and served at Greater Mount Nebo AME Church in Bowie, Maryland, under Dr. Jonathan L. Weaver.

Despite numerous sponsorship and work permit challenges, the Rev. Hobson served with distinction. She was able to evangelize persons who had recently moved to Britain, institute discussions, and have an initial service to plant a new location in addition to the Mother Church. She was chair of the Board of Examiners, chair of the Conference Women in Ministry, and served on the Finance Committee.

The Rev. Hobson has a Masters of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary and a Bachelor’s degree from Simmons College in Government/Economics. She has transferred to the Second Episcopal District and is serving in the Washington Conference under Bishop James Levert Davis.  She is married to Kainan, has two sons, and three grandchildren.  Her leadership in the Annual Conference will be missed.

The Sixteenth District, and especially the European Annual Conference, welcomes the Rev. Lucinda Burgess who was assigned the pastor of Richard Allen Cathedral on May 19, 2019. The Rev. Burgess is originally from Bermuda but has lived in the United States for several years. She is the former pastor of Ross Chapel AME Church in Jamestown, Ohio, and also served as the Herstoriographer for the Ohio South Ohio Women in Ministry and as the chairperson for the History and Heritage Committee of the Third Episcopal District.

The Rev. Burgess is an author, playwright, and contributing writer. She believes that her dual role as a Christian and historian is to keep the past alive for future generations for which they can learn and live. The Rev. Burgess has published Faith and Foundations and Martin, a Biographical Sketchand has written articles for the Christian RecorderandPayne Scholars at Payne.

The Rev. Burgess is the mother of two adult sons, Wayne A. and Zhane C. J. Burgess, and grandmother of two, Nyleah K. S. Burgess and Navi’ L. Burgess Dears. In May 2017, she graduated from Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio, with a Masters of Divinity degree with Honors. In 1992, she graduated from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Certificate in Education.
