Hear ye, Hear ye!

Hear ye, Hear ye!
By Matthew Seawright

“Hear ye, hear ye” is a phrase that is usually followed by some sort of news. It may be a declaration of action or meaningful accomplishment. While this is a time of celebration, it’s also a call to action.

Many gathered from around the denomination for CONVO 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. Not only were legislative changes proposed but leaders were also challenged to ponder how many of these changes are presently at work. I left the meeting full of hope and excitement for the direction the AME Church is headed.

One theme stood out and was consistent among many of the sessions. It was that we need to connect to a younger demographic differently. As the culture shifts daily, many are longing for church leadership that extends beyond the walls and ways.

The Rev. Katrese Kirk shared how up and coming generations are looking for authenticity. They are waiting for the church to be the church and not just “have church.”

I have been blessed to share ideas as well. One of them is the need for the Connection to commit to ministry versus Sunday services only.

I grew up in a church that was grown on the basis of ministry. People from all walks of life brought gifts and talents that not only enhanced the life of the church but created a brand.

Many believe that brands are for businesses and businesses are for profit. The church is not for profit. This is true and false. No, the church is not for profit; however, the church does operate according to its financial abilities or lack thereof.

The Rev. Samuel Green and Ms. Martinique Mix led a session about “AME Storytelling: Branding and Marketing.” Social media is proof that a solid brand will introduce someone before you have a chance to meet someone. AME Churches around the world are proof of that and an authentic brand will attract and encourage opportunities for spiritual growth.

I believe up and coming generations are hungry for what the church has to offer. We seek thriving ministries that impact the community and support causes.

Those on the outside looking in want to know what churches are about besides preaching? Are you concerned and active in the stride for socioeconomic justice beyond your mission statement? How will I see tangible results through my belief in Christ on a daily basis? How will we respond?
