First Fridays Millennials Group Meeting Held
By Ashley Tait
The millennials of St. John AME Church in Huntsville, Alabama, where the Rev. Maurice Wright, II, is the pastor, held their first meeting. The First Friday event was hosted by Pastor and First Lady Wright at Cantina Laredo on August 3, 2018, and it was more than alright. These amazing leaders know how to create a welcoming environment where everyone can relax and get to know one another.
The group of millennials had so much fun from the icebreaker, sharing nicknames, and playing games like completing a statement or choosing something they would rather do instead and why. I had to choose between having a free international trip annually or an unlimited amount of trips within America.
The black community and culture were also discussed, specifically how it varies regionally and the level of connection felt by the participants. There were two recent graduates from the counseling psychology program of Alabama A&M University in attendance at this event as well and naturally the conversation turned to mental health and the needs in the community and the church. As one of the recent graduates, it was great to hear some of the concerns and needs.
Due to this event, I know more than a few faces in church and these faces also recognize me. The only thing left to do now is to commit to an organization within the church to get busy serving the church and community.
Thank you, Pastor and First Lady Wright, for taking the time to spend with the millennials. It was genuinely appreciated. It was great to be in a non-judgmental environment where you could listen and share your opinion and everyone felt comfortable doing so.
