I Hear Music in the Air
By Rev. Dr. Maxine Thomas
Acts 2:2 says, “And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.” There is wind in the air. Can’t you hear it? A great Negro Spiritual declares, “Over my head, I hear music in the air… There must be a God somewhere.”
What do you hear? Perhaps you hear the words of sons and daughters of former slaves to the tune of, “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen.” I know you’ve seen some trouble in your day. It wasn’t a master with a whip or flying white sheets in the night brightened by the glare of angry flames surrounding a cross that liberates but you’ve seen trouble in your day.
Every one of us has had some hills to climb and some valleys to travel. Job 14:1 says, “A mortal, born of woman, [is of] few of days and [is] full of trouble.” If you live long enough, trouble will sure ‘nough knock at your door. Matthew 5:45 reminds us that it rains on the just and the unjust.
Hush…I hear something in the air. There were some folks in the upper room and the Bible says that they were all in one place and in one accord. If you want God to move in your midst, I dare you to grab another believer by the hand. Matthew 18:19 says, “If two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” I dare you to touch and agree with your brother and sister in the Lord. There is moving and shaking in the spiritual realm.
The text says “And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.” The Holy Spirit filled the house! Bless the wonderful name of Jesus! The permeating presence of God’s Spirit, the overflow of God’s power into the life and being of a believer, is like music in the air. It’s a melody of divine love.
When God’s power fills the temple (Corinthians 6:19), you can love those who despitefully use you. When the wind of God—the Auah, Pneuma, or Holy Ghost—fills the temple, there is a melody of strength and might. It’s a strong sound. Psalm 28:8 says, “The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.” It’s a sound in the air that causes demons to tremble. It’s a sound in the air that drowns out oppression, depression, and obsession. It’s a sound that will bring peace, power, and prosperity. It’s a sound that will fill your lonely nights and make everything all right. It’s a sound that will outroar the sound of the winds of despair and the waves of tribulation. It’s a sound that shatters unbelief and mends broken hearts. I hear music in the air!
Exhale! With your whole heart, yearn for the loving and healing wind of God to flood your soul. In this moment of cleansing and expectation, release the melody of distant lovers from the past. Their song has filled your ears and enraptured your being for too long. Release it. Let it go. Exhale. Now, await the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. Over your head, hear the music in the air.
